MIND THE MAP has been a sheer joy. From the moment that strange, powerful impulse created the intention to use my late father's maps in a creative way, a whole new appreciation of the creative process has opened up. Not only have 55 artists helped me produce 110 astounding, unique works of art, they have also helped me cement my passion for collaboration as the key to creative freedom. Collaboration is not for the faint-hearted; it requires courage, humility, acceptance, and trust. That friction is where the magic lies. It turns the SFVFS helix and produces more opportunity, more scope for expansion and diversity, and it certainly makes being an artist a whole lot more interesting.
I want to thank all the artist for not only sharing their talents, but for allowing me to explore and indulge my musings around science, maths, and creativity. They were very patient during the six-month rabbit hole. I have no idea what the next turn of the helix will provide, but I am in no doubt that more will be revealed. The artworks themselves are not framed, and are available in the state they were in when they passed the VOID, raw but folded; some have lost the ability to fold back to their original states; some have had minor tape surgery to ensure they maintain their form. But beyond the organic physicality of their bodies lies the stranger connection the artists had to the apparently random maps they were given. We discovered that if we looked closely we sometimes saw that the area is profoundly connected to the artists, in subtle ways and that the substrate, the map-helix, was moving in a more succinct way than we realised.
Some people call it serendipity. Some call it fate. In this moment, I simply see it as a mechanism that moves forward and delivers an experience for you, whether you are conscious of it or not. Just like the ever-changing walls of Leake Street, the completed VOID moments become an intriguing animation of experiences, and I keep an open mind, as best I can, about what they reveal.
Even if it is an AI hallucinating.
